professionals on our judging panel;

Curator
David Hugh Evans
AAIPP, Epson
AIPP South Australian Professional Photographer of the
Year 2006, 2009
|
|
David Hugh Evans believes landscape photography is
the art of painting with light to create an image, not
merely to capture it.
This gentle craft appears
at a glance to be an easy feat, and yet is so utterly
difficult. Subjects cannot be manufactured, the light
cannot be forced, and patience is not an option to be
discarded. Darkness is the canvas. Slowly and carefully
the light is allowed to bleed onto the film.
David has a distinctive style, one he calls
'slow photography'. His images frequently have an
ethereal and painterly quality, a result of slow film
and long shutter speeds ranging from seconds to hours.
It is known that the human brain does not
process moments in time that are much faster than 1/10
of a second, otherwise registering these moments as
movement. Slow photography is not about trying to
capture moments that are possibly too brief for us to
see. It is about layering a series of moments together
to create an otherwise un-created and un-recognized
image. It is the layering of time onto film.
Moving into the realm of image creation from
image capture is the fine art of a good landscape
photographer. Evans has well and truly earned his
reputation as one of the finest image-makers in
Australia.
David's motivation is to remind us
that fun and wild, untamed places are critical elixirs
in life.
David is a multi award-winning
photographer, with a professional career spanning more
than a decade. He is a specialist in the panoramic
format and his accolades include The AIPP Epson South
Australian Professional Photographer of the Year in 2006
and 2009, AIPP SA Landscape Photographer of the Year in
2006, 2008 and 2009, AIPP SA Illustrative Photographer
of the Year 2009, and runner-up AIPP Australian
Landscape Photographer of the Year in
2008
He is proudly supported by Epson
Australia and represented by Lonely Planet Images, and
his work has appeared in many publications including a
series of his own landscape photography books. David is
an Associate of The Australian Institute of Professional
Photography.

Christian Fletcher West
Australian landscape photographer
|
|
Christian Fletcher has been taking photographs
professionally for over 18 years. "In that time I have
had to evolve with every advance in technology and
creative technique. It is such an exciting and
challenging time to be in the industry.
"The advent of digital has revolutionised photography
as an art form. It has also bought photography and image
manipulation to the masses. Every second person now
takes photographs and many are trying their hand at
creating a living from their hobbies.
"Digital in some ways made it easier to be a
photographer, but it still takes a certain level of
skill and understanding to truly master the craft. I cut
my teeth on film and lived for years in a darkened room,
mixing chemicals, printing my own prints and framing
them. When I think of where I began, look at where I am
now and beyond to the future, I am amazed at how far I
have come and how far there is still left to go.
"Every month someone develops an new idea or approach
that refines photography just that little bit more. It
is these refinements that keep it exciting for me.
Photography comes second to my family, I place it that
highly. Sometimes it can be frustrating, sometimes
depressing, but it is always rewarding if you work hard
and want to succeed."
Christian has just won 4 awards at the 2009
Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPA)
including a Gold, two Silvers with Distinction and a
Silver.

Nick Rains M. Photog., Editor
Better Digital Camera, landscape photographer
|
|
Nick Rains loves being a landscape photographer
because it gets him out and about. "This is one of the
reasons I love this job - I get to go the some of the
remotest places in this huge country, far away from the
busy cities and into a place where you can quite
literally roll out a swag, light a fire and sleep under
the stars."
Nick is widely published which is very satisfying,
but he says having your work appreciated for its own
qualities is probably the ultimate goal for any serious
photographer. "I started off in photography almost
straight out of Swansea University in South Wales where
I studied Zoology. I picked up the basics by going out
and using film, oh, and reading photography books as
well. I didn't do any formal training until a few years
later when I did a two year tech course on studio and
commercial photography. Commercial photography was well
paid and reasonably interesting but I soon got more
interested in travel photography so, like many others
were starting to do, I shouldered a backpack and headed
off into Asia and Australia.
"I ended up in Australia and was soon working for
Canon during the 1986 America's Cup in Fremantle. This
was where I met all the top international photographers
and magazine editors who were all very helpful to a
young photographer starting out in serious international
work. I had a ball during the 12 months I spent in
Perth, my work was published in Sports Illustrated,
London Times, Paris Match, Stern and many other well
known publications. I worked for Time Magazine for a
while as an assistant and learned a whole load of stuff
about what professional photography is all about.
"Of course my Visa finally ran out and I headed back
to England. My new contacts stood me in good stead and
this period was when I fully developed my landscape
photography by undertaking extended trips into Germany,
Turkey, Italy, France, and Spain shooting for the stock
photography market. Finally I decided to move back to
Australia for good in 1990 and have been shooting this
fabulous country ever since. I have travelled almost
half a million kilometers in that time and have been to
just about every major place on interest. In fact the
only major places I have yet to visit are Cape York and
the central deserts of WA. "
Nick is a Master of Photography with the AIPP and the
editor of Better Digital Camera magazine.

Jaspal Jandu UK landscape
photographer
|
|
Jaspal Jandu is a British born panoramic photographer
based in London, England. With worldwide book releases
and regular touring exhibitions, Jaspal Jandu is now
recognised as one of the world's leading exponents of
panoramic landscape photography with a special emphasis
on natural phenomena and the environment.
Working alongside his father - a renowned
architect - Jaspal's creative flair was apparent from a
very early age. Whilst completing a thesis on 'The
Renaissance school and its use of light and proportion',
a serendipitous encounter with the world of large-format
panoramic film photography provided him with the perfect
medium through which to explore light and proportion in
the natural world.
Aligning the effects of
dramatic light and his own unique sense of composition,
Jaspal was soon receiving commissions and began
traveling extensively around the world. Returning to
countries over the course of many years, he compiled
time-lapse images of glacial retreat and desertification
which resonated strongly with the mood and the tastes of
the general public and art editors alike. Jaspal's
travels culminated in 2009 with the release of an epic
volume, 'Natural Wonders: A Panoramic Vision'. Covering
25 countries over a four year voyage, it proved to be a
perfectly timed wake-up call, illustrating that the
intrinsic beauty of our shared world is both transient
and perilously fragile.
The volume was warmly
received and was accompanied by extensive press coverage
and a touring exhibition which played host to over six
thousand visitors.
Jaspal is currently engaged
in two new panoramic photography projects, including one
on the American West. In addition, Jaspal Jandu
Photography has recently incorporated a publishing house
and will continue to expand its range of large, limited
edition prints to its dedicated client base.
